Crystal deposits can make attractive details in various fantasy and sci-fi scenarios and the method for making them is fairly well known i.e. take a piece of plastic rod or sprue, and carve or sand it such that it has a hexagonal or octagonal cross section before finishing off the ends and painting. In the example to the right however has come up with a rather splendid variation on the theme by using translucent plastic from a cocktail stirrer (as shown below).
Because
the plastic from which cocktail stirrers are made is somewhat harder
than your average sprue, jedion357 chose to sand it rather than using
knife and while this results in a roughened surface texture it looks
great with light shining on/through it as you can see; no painting
required.
